December 7, 2005 - Stephan Fuchs, Bern - To meet Harald Haack naked at the scene is just not possible. The digital camera is part of his life and without it, Haack does not exist. From public roads to the forgotten and unseen places, he catches the details with his camera that we oversee.
After the Graveyard Sculptures series, which he showed on the online gallery ‘faceworks’, he presents shots from the Swiss capital, Bern und its surrounding landscape. To me, a Berne resident who is quite familiar with its secrets, Harald Haack surprised me with the beauty and the rich kingdom of Bern’s filigree subjects. As he surprised me he will take you on a special trip too.
Manipulated Photos? Not really. Haack explains it as simple cultivation, in fact the same process as in chemical photography when you try to obtain the best result in the printing process. The manipulation is no more than bringing the viewer’s eye to the substance of the picture’s motive.
Besides the manipulated photos he presents on his website, he also shows the original, the naked, “true” photo. A little smaller, but that’s ok, as it will give you an idea about a photo’s development and its history.
Digital photos also need to be developed. Of course not anymore in the alchemistic gloominess of your darkroom, but on your computer. The alchemistic gloominess may still exist in your brain as you start the first steps of working with digital photography. That is where the history of a photo starts and your imagination is your guide through the entire developing process as well as with other diverse graphic software.
Harald Haack’s photography reaches beyond just technical knowledge and equipment; he brings spontaneous, often witty situations to life with a twist of irony. Have a look and decide for yourself.
